In 2002, Tedd Durden had a simple but powerful dream: to create a legacy for his three children. After moving to a beautiful property overlooking Catoctin Creek in historic Taylorstown, Virginia, he purchased neighboring land – which would eventually become Creek’s Edge Winery.
What started as a vineyard, with 4.5 acres planted on a steep 17% grade, was originally meant to supply grapes to other wineries. Early varietals included Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. But as the vines matured, Tedd saw a new vision take root: not just a vineyard, but a winery built around family, community and craftsmanship.
With a background in construction, Tedd designed and oversaw the building of what is now our rustic-elegant tasting room and winemaking cellar. It quickly became a labor of love, not just for Tedd, but for his children and the local community. Young men from the area helped build the space, working alongside Tedd from high school through college. Many of them still return every summer to lend a hand, and their contributions are honored with the naming of Water’s Edge White and personalized wine labels.
For Tedd, it was never just about building a winery. It was about building something deeper: a place where people could connect, grow and celebrate life’s simple pleasures. Every effort was made to work with the land, using natural materials, protecting the surrounding environment and preserving the historic spirit of Taylorstown.
The winery itself is an Amish-built structure, crafted from the finest hardwoods in the tradition of raised barns. Local stone, black walnut harvested from the property and hand-forged metalwork can be found throughout. A cozy fieldstone fireplace welcomes guests on chilly nights, while an iconic silo (designed to mimic the inside of a wine barrel) connects the tasting room, upstairs loft and cellar below. In 2016, Tedd was honored with the Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence Award for the handcrafted staircase inside the silo.
Beyond the tasting room, guests can relax under the high timber-framed roof of the outdoor wedding pavilion, stroll the vineyard or unwind by the creek in an Adirondack chair. Picnic tables, lawn games and wide-open spaces make it easy to savor the beauty of the property.
Looking ahead, the vision continues. Future plans include restoring the historic Taylorstown Store and adding new spaces for guests to explore and enjoy. We invite you to experience Creek’s Edge Winery, a place where handcrafted charm, heartfelt hospitality and Virginia’s wine country spirit come together!
