reek's Edge Winery located in historic Taylorstown, Virginia sits along the lovely Catoctin Creek in Northern Virginia's Loudoun County. Its owner, Tedd Durden began dreaming of a legacy for his three children in 2002 while living in Fairfax County. In 2005, the family moved to a beautiful property on the opposite side of the creek and, in 2007, Mr. Durden purchased the land which is now home to Creek's Edge Winery.
The vineyard on site includes 4.5 acres under vine, planted on a 17% grade. Initial varietals, included Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Initially these grapes were planted to sell to other vineyards, however as the vines matured, a new vision came to light. With a background in construction, a winery was envisioned. It became a labor of love, mentoring his children and young men throughout the community, as well as building a business for his children to inherit and enjoy for years to come. With that in mind, every effort was made to partner with the land, rather than change it, thus reducing impact on the surrounding environment and wildlife.
The Winery, which hosts a tasting room of rustic elegance, a bridal loft and barrel room is an Amish structure. It is crafted with the best hardwoods and, in the tradition of raised barns, has a feel from years gone by. Natural materials were used throughout the building including local stone, black walnut from the property and handcrafted metal work. A field stone fireplace provides a warm and cozy atmosphere on cool nights or on lazy winter days.
Attached to the winery is an iconic silo that mimics the interior of a wine barrel complete with metal strapped oak. The interior of the silo serves to connect the main level with the private upstairs dining loft and the wine making and aging room below. The exteriors pay homage to the surrounding farmlands and heritage of the property.
In 2016, three years after opening, Mr. Durden received the Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence Award in the category of Details for this exquisite and singly unique stairwell.
Recently in 2016, the outdoor wedding pavilion was completed. Though not exclusively for weddings, patrons are able to lounge under the high timber framed roof and appreciate the craftsmanship under this covered area of the pavilion. The open style allows one to take in the beauty of the vineyard and the sweeping lawn that leads to the creek. Beneath, with a stone exterior and lovely wooden doors, a port room and groom's quarters have been laid out. Creek's Edge Winery's expansive property offers a spacious partially shaded deck, perfect for lounging and taking in the view of the rolling lawn which leads to the creek. In the warmer months, Adirondack chairs line the creek's edge, offering a private little get away. The open lawn offers picnic tables, corn hole boards, horse shoes and kite flying.
Future vision for the property includes renovating the historic Taylorstown Store, frame shop and barn that greet patrons as they enter this exquisite property... Creek's Edge Winery!
